Flex Fuel Install
No ethanol content showing in the MHD, EcuTek or BM3 app?
The BimmerECU ECA uses PT CAN 2 via the TMS harness. Both MHD and EcuTek default to PT CAN, so you must manually change the ethanol analyzer setting to “Zeitronix” in your tuning app. “Zeitronix” is the correct preset because it matches the CAN protocol used by the BimmerECU ECA.
BimmerECU ECA with Bootmod3?
Bootmod3 uses PT CAN, which is compatible with the BimmerECU as long as the device is connected to the correct CAN line (PT CAN in this case). TMS Flex Fuel instructions are designed to connect into PT CAN 2.
Ethanol content is dropping during a pull
Check that the ethanol sensor is on the main line (not on the return line). Ethanol sensors placed on a return fuel line may give false readings because there isn’t constant flow of fuel through the sensor.
BimmerECU LED Indicator Troubleshooting
LED | Color | Behavior | Meaning |
---|---|---|---|
Link | 🔴 Red | Blinks for ~10 seconds at power-up | Indicates power-up and self-check |
Sensor | 🔵 Blue | Blinking | Ethanol sensor data is being received |
Power | 🟢 Green | Solid | Power is present and stable |
ECU | 🔴 Red | Blinks for ~10 seconds | Indicates CAN bus initialization |
Common Troubleshooting Tips
Instrument Cluster Flickers on Startup?
Check for CAN Hi and CAN Low being reversed. This is the most common cause.
RPM Not Reading?
Crank sensor is either not connected or connected to the oil pressure sensor instead of the crankshaft position sensor.
ReFlex Not Reading Ethanol Content?
- Confirm the correct firmware version is installed based on your ReFlex serial number.
- If TunerPro shows ethanol content but your tuning app does not, double-check that Motiv ReFlex is selected in the app’s ethanol analyzer settings.

Wiring & Power Issues
Blown Fuse on TMS Harness?
Often caused by incorrect wiring of a secondary low-pressure fuel pump (LPFP). Some aftermarket LPFPs (e.g., from Vader Solutions) have reversed power and ground.
- Solution: Refer to the correct pinout for the secondary LPFP before connecting. Find link below:
No Power to ReFlex?
If you've installed a top-mount turbo, verify that the TMS harness is still connected to the PCV heater (ReFlex gets power here).
- Check Voltage: Use a multimeter to confirm 12V at the OEM PCV connector.
- Note: Incorrect LPFP wiring can damage the Integrated Power Supply Module near the DME. If there is no power, inspect and possibly replace this module.

Tunning Troubleshooting
MHD Tunning
No Ethanol Content Displayed in MHD App
Check in TunerPro: If ethanol data is visible in TunerPro, the ReFlex is working.
In the MHD app:
- Go to ECA settings and select "ReFlex" as the analyzer.
- Your tuner may also need to switch the CAN setting from PT CAN to PT CAN 2 within the tune.

Code MHD001 – CAN Sensor Timeout
This error indicates a CAN communication issue.
- Make sure the CAN High and CAN Low wires are not reversed. A reversed CAN will cause a persistent error.
- If the wiring is correct, open TunerPro and confirm you can see live data (ethanol content, fuel pressure, etc.).
- If TunerPro shows data but the MHD app does not, the ReFlex likely needs reprogramming. Contact Motiv support.
Code MHD009 – Crank Sensor Error
Triggered when no crank signal is detected.
Common Cause: The harness is mistakenly connected to the oil pressure sensor instead of the crankshaft position sensor—they are located close together.
Fix: Reconnect the TMS harness to the correct sensor.
Code MHD007 – Port Injection Error
If all injectors are plugged in and this code still appears:
Common Cause: Crank sensor is wired to the oil sensor, causing both this error and a crank sensor error (MHD009).
Fix: Verify crank sensor is connected properly.
Code MHD008 – Cam Sensor Error
Ensure the TMS harness is connected to the correct camshaft position sensor.
BootMod3 Tunning
No Communication, But You Can Change Parameters?
- BootMod3 requires the ReFlex to be connected to PT CAN only.
- If it’s connected to PT CAN 2, data logging and communication will not function.
EcuTek Tuning
Code 255 – CAN Bus Error
- Check TunerPro: If TunerPro shows ethanol/fuel pressure data, the ReFlex is working.
- Conclusion: The issue is with ReFlex communication to the car’s ECU – recheck wiring and ECU CAN configuration.
